From LUGOP

Things are picking up a lot for the Student Chapter of LUGOP. Unlike the last two meetings which mostly consisted of random conversation, we covered quite a bit of business and we actually ran out of time.

  • The 10 student requirement for Student Organizations was discussed and we further threw around ideas about getting people involved
  • The Revolution OS screening was brought up and we talked about the general setup that will be used
  • The Pizza Party was mentioned and there was some talk about planning for the future LUGOP Installfest
  • Zack attended the meeting and chilled with us
  • A final decision was made about having a December Student Chapter meeting. The meeting will be on December 1st
  • The printing budget was discussed slightly. There was discussion about the Microsoft bashing in the current flyers; the flyers for December will be bashing Apple to make things a bit more equal. The shock approach for the flyers probably won't be used that often next semester but the current flyers are better than the ones that had been put up previously to promote the Student Chapter; the shock approach is inspired by the work of the Student Philosophy Association. The need for a banner for LUGOP was also mentioned
  • We talked about the problems involving the bureaucracy of the Student Activities department
  • The usage of the RSO room was mentioned. Only computer use was mentioned but the room can also be used for storing documents in the filing cabinets (we haven't opted in for a filing cabinet), holding officer meetings, answering calls and voicemail related to the LUGOP (we have not opted in for that service either)
  • There was some discussion on the benefits of having an account on the LUGOP server. Ssh, sftp, and hosting web-accessible files were the major benefits that could be thought of. Email access was something that we weren't sure of but email access is available. The major condition is that sending mail doesn't work outside of the LUGOP server due to network restrictions but sending mail does work within the LUGOP server using Pine
  • The distro mirroring project was discussed. Micah made a vote for Debian.
  • I mentioned my upcoming Linux laptop nightmare about how the laptop might be used for LUGOP stuff
  • The gaming servers (Enemy Territory and Tremulous) were talked about in regards to the possibility of LUGOP Wan parties. No final decision has been made about whether we will have the Wan parties or about the rotation of games
  • The Student Chapter Installfest/LAN party was discussed briefly. A tournament might possibly happen as an extra incentive for people to attend. We still need to decide on what game will be played. The current list of possible games is pretty long and will be posted on the Discussion entry for this page and on the LUGOP mailing list later
  • The release of the Linux version of Flash Player 9 beta was discussed
  • Zack mentioned his tech support trip that he was going to make and how he would bring up Linux with the person he was helping
  • Micah's presentation had to get held off until next month because we ran out of time

Sweet. This is the longest Student Chapter meeting recap page so far.
